Military Training Facility - The commission was to design a new training facility for the Norwegian Navy. The building houses a complex program with specialized naval training and facilities for her 5,000 employees who work on the base each day.
Facilities include two pools, a multipurpose hall, various workout rooms, a climbing wall, employee changing rooms and offices, and outdoor facilities. The full-height foyer is the social center of the building, visually and functionally connecting different contents.

The new building is located in an underutilized portion of the naval base. One of the most important design tasks was to define this site and create a place of value from this remaining area. The buildings are placed at the edge of the coast to compose the training landscape and define clear boundaries for the naval base. This location also offers a direct connection to the sea.

Large volumes adjust both in plan and height to divide the scale. The façade is mostly clad in cheap white polymer composite panels set in abstract shell motifs, lending light to the large windowless walls, while the shell motifs provide references to the marine environment.
Open and untreated concrete, brick, unglazed tile and oiled wood are widely used in the interior. The pool is made of stainless steel. Particular emphasis was placed on creating a robust building using durable, maintenance-free natural materials that could withstand both aggressive coastal environments and aggressive use by Marines.
The building is designed for very low energy consumption. A seawater heat pump is used for heating.
Since the building opened in 2011, physical training at the location has increased by 500%. Design sustainable indoor exercise and fitness facilities that help prepare VMI cadets to be “citizen soldiers,” while respecting the campus's historical context and mission.
New Tsc Facility Improves Training
The 205,000-square-foot (19,045 cm) facility incorporates Alexander Jackson Davis' original Gothic revival of his 19th-century campus his design. Inside, you'll find the latest in physical training features, including a 200m hydraulic incline track, weight and cardio rooms, an obstacle course, physical and combat readiness training initiatives, and seating for 1,800 people. A box truss structure matched to the curvature of the vaulted roof creates a pole-less high ropes course above the main course. The sustainable design features of this project include a vegetated roof, bio-storage and water tanks for rainwater absorption, filtration and reuse, and subfloor conditioned air delivery to occupied zones without the use of fans. Includes passive HVAC systems that significantly reduce energy consumption. The facility was built over an existing City Branch Creek to create a reservoir to mitigate the perennial flooding that occurred at the site. HKS designers worked with Commonwealth Architects on the $66 million project.
All 1,800 of her VMI cadets at some point during graduation, with an emphasis on ROTC activities and the school's famous "Rat Challenge," his 10-week intensive training program for new cadets. to use the facility for training. The client describes the facility as “always here,” and in 2018 he received LEED Gold certification.
